Copenhagen 1919: A young worker finds herself unemployed and pregnant. She meets Dagmar, who runs an underground adoption agency. A strong relationship grows stronger, but her world is shattered when she discovers the shocking truth behind her work. Denmark’s official submission for “Best International Feature Film”. The category for the 97th Academy Awards in 2025. I liked the promise that society will be the real monster, not the people it destroys. However, telling the story through a character who is merely a victim takes the film away from that goal. It’s not social criticism when all the evil is concentrated in one main villain, while everyone else is acquitted for their good intentions. On the contrary, it should have shown how in such a brutal context evil and compassion are not so easily distinguished. The tone was also a bit more melancholic than anything else – leaving the viewer indifferent to what was happening on screen.
